obama said the law was politically driven. susan mcginnis is in washington with details. good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. yeah, the governor now says he wants the economic boost that the law would bring, the jobs and the companies that would locate there, but many disagree. workers say it's going to push down their pay and benefits and weaken unions. police stand shoulder to shoulder preparing for as many as 10,000 protesters at the michigan state capitol today. >> people have a constitutional right to demonstrate. however, all we ask is that they do it in an orderly, lawful, and civil manner. >> reporter: state legislators vote this morning on a right-to-work bill that would weaken unions. opponents acknowledge they're powerless to stop it. >> at the end of the day they'll be passed and signed by the governor. that doesn't make it right. >> reporter: the bill means michigan workers would no longer have to pay the union fees for negotiating contracts and other services. >> if i'm being provided a service by a particular organization, i don't care if that's a club due or
into mr. obama's hands negotiating in public prematuring giving up on the tack issue. this is why i think it's an easy case to make if you're on the right. we had an election. if you respect the election, you must assume they were paying attention when barack obama, the president, as you like to say appropriately, the president over and over in every speech said we've got to raise the tax rates on the top bracket. and everybody heard it, and everybody voted for him knew they were voting for that and that was the majority. that would help the conservatives say this time i'll go with the voter. >> and this shows if you live long enough, you will see anything happen and now we have rush limbaugh being the voice of moderation. >> on the dream team. >> within the republican party. the voice for pragmatic decision making in the party. i think people do realize that. they say it privately. each day more and more of them say it publicly. this is inevitably where we're going but the republican party is like the lord of the flies. it's not clear who is in charge. that's why i can't join you. i can'
-election of president obama validates his particular approach here, which is that middle class people should not have a burden placed upon their shoulders. the working classes should not be punished, and god knows the working poor should not be further marginalized in this economy by trying to give goodies and treats to the republicans. they are playing grinch for -- the grinches who stole the christmas of working class people here, and president obama is trying to talk about the spirit of generosity and common sense of the american people. so what he's been trying to say is, i'm not going to budge, and i think he's got a reassured approach here. the american public has spoken. president obama has girded up his lions and he's digging in his heels. it may be one of these right before the stroke of midnight that he says, look, i have no other choice here. we're not going to have this mexican standoff, so to speak, and i have to get out of the way in the game of chicken. recogniz otherwise, ear all going to be soup at the end of the day. >> harry reid cites paul ryan as one of those giving boehner heart
obama called boehner and asked for more details on taxes. boehner's office said they're waiting for more details on spenting cuts. liz, why does it matter who gives what details first? what's the game here? >> well, i think what you're saying is whoever gives the details first, the other side is going to have an advantage to either position against those details. you know, the white house during health care debate, for example, was very -- it was, you know, step back and didn't give many details as to what they wanted to do because at the beginning because they didn't want to target on their back. i think this is almost a game of chicken right now. the problem is it's a game of chicken with very, very high stakes. and you've got the white house out there, you know, publicly putting pressure on republicans by sending obama, for example, to michigan but gamt trying to negotiate behind the scenes with boehner. and it's a two-prong strategy that i think carries real risk. >> it's kind of negotiation 101. i mean, the most basic kind of negotiation, you know, don't show your hand if you don't
